Senior Flexonics Pathway Repairs Turbine Crossover for Delmarva Power and Light
During the fall turn around at Delmarva Power and Light’s Edgemoor station, a leak was discovered in the crossover
duct on the west turbine. Senior Flexonics Pathway was called and an engineer was dispatched to the site to
investigate the extent of the problem. Water vapor had seeped through the first ply in the ply testable bellows
originally supplied by Zallea Bros. for Westinghouse. Repeated start ups since the leak first began had caused the
inner ply to implode when the accumulated water between the plies turned to steam. On Senior Flexonics Pathway’s
recommendation, the crossover was sent to the Senior Flexonics Pathway facility in Oak Ridge for expedited
repair.
The bellows were designed to be exactly like the original
equipment. The original root rings were reused to save
time in fabrication. The crossover expansion joint was a
pressure balanced elbow with inside attachments. A drawing
was not available; therefore, the unit had to be taken
apart and measured to determine the actual bellows dimensions
before fabricating the new bellows.
The turn around of the crossover took 3 weeks in Senior
Flexonics Pathway’s Oak Ridge facility. All work was
completed on schedule.
