Specialized High Temperature Expansion Joints
Used to Solve Problems in Fluid Bed Boiler
Circulating fluid bed boilers use fluidized sand in the bed
of the boiler to facilitate the burning of the various fuels.
In most circulating fluid bed boilers, it is necessary to
convey hot sand through piping at one point or another
in the process. Where sand is conveyed through hot
wall pipe, there are unusual design problems that must
be considered for the expansion joints that are required
to handle the axial growth of the piping.
Design problems for such a system includes the analysis
and design for vibration that is caused by the changing
momentum of sand as it passes through the pipe/
expansion joint system. Also, the anchor structures attached
to the 1300 degree F. hot wall pipe must be designed
to allow for expansion of the pipe without imposing unreasonable stresses. However, the anchor structures
must provide a firm grip on the pipe to handle dead
weight and vibrations. The expansion joint designs must
be able to handle sand of all grain sizes without becoming
plugged and rigid.
Senior Flexonics Pathwayworked closely with Riley
Stoker to achieve solutions to the above problems by
providing experienced engineers to work with project
people at Riley Stoker and full consulting services that
included pipe stress analysis.
